JNLR – Oct 09 – Sep 10

Any radio listenership drops by 2pp to 85% of all adults (3,011,000 total – listened yesterday)

Local radio continues to show growth, up +1pp year on year to 58% of all adults and has also grown its market share (total minutes listened) by 4pp.

National

Radio 1’s total listenership has dropped by 2pp both nationally and in Dublin while remaining flat in Cork, year on year.  There is a slight increase in the station’s core ABC1 audience, up 1pp with 32% of all ABC1s tuning in daily.  All of the station’s key programmes showed declines in the period with Morning Ireland losing 32,000 listeners, Pat Kenny down 7,000 and Drivetime down 9,000.

Decreasing results for 2FM, the station posting losses in total listeners (-2pp) and market share (-2pp).  Key programmes suffered drops in listeners, with the Breakfast Show down 17,000 listeners and the 0900-1200 slot losing 32,000 listeners in the period.  2FM have just launched another revamped schedule with new presenters for The 2FM Breakfast Show (Hector O’hEochagain) and Ryan Tubridy taking over the 0900-1200 slot and it is hoped that they will help to turn around the fortunes of the station. Newstalk has maintained its total listenership year on year while posting a slight gain in market share, up 0.3pp.  Key programmes maintained listenership with George Hook adding 2,000 listeners.  Today FM continues to show a decline in total listeners, down 2pp and showing loss in market share, down 1pp nationally.  There were some declines for some of its key programmes, Ian Dempsey shedding 25,000 listeners, Ray D’Arcy down 15,000 and The Last Word with Matt Cooper down 13,000.

 Dublin

FM104 had a small drop in total listenership, down 1pp but FM104 retains the position as number one station in Dublin.  In terms of programming, the Strawberry Alarm Clock dropped 3,000 listeners. Jim Jim Nugent (previously with 2FM) has recently returned to host the programme.  The Adrian Kennedy Phone Show shows yet further growth, adding 4,000 listeners during the period.

98FM had a slight drop in overall listenership year on year, down 1pp.  Declines also against 15-34 (-1pp) and ABC1 (-1pp).  The 98FM Morning Crew Breakfast Show added 1,000 listeners, maintaining its position as the number one breakfast show in the capital.

Spin 103.8 has maintained total listenership but crucially has increased listenership amongst its core 15-34 audience, up 2pp.

However, the key 1900-2400 daypart continues to show a loss in market share amongst 15-34s, down 8pp year on year.

Q102 had a strong performance, increasing total listenership by 1pp and gains against 15-34 (+3pp), ABC1 (+2pp) and Housekeepers (+2pp).

Phantom had mixed results, total listenership drops 1pp and 15-34s dropping by 2pp.

However, PT market share for the station showed improvement, up 1pp overall.

Cork

Cork 96/103 had a small drop in total listenership for 96/103, down 1pp in the period.  The station did post a strong gain against ABC1’s, up 4pp year on year.

Red FM obtained small increases in total listenership and their core 15-34 audience, both up 1pp.

Solid growth in TAP (0700-2400) market share for 15-34s, up an impressive 7pp

Newstalk had another strong performance in Cork, with total listenership up 2pp.  Today FM continues to show a decline in total listeners down (-3pp).

Local and Multi Region

4FM have increased their total listenership slightly, up 1pp and have also gained against ABC1s, up 1pp.

Local Radio continues to go from strength to strength, up 1pp in total listenership year on year Solid increases in key audience listenership, with 15-34s and ABC1s both increasing by 2pp.  Total minutes listened to local radio (market share) increased by an impressive 4pp.

Best Radio station online.

Sky Media grow their station platform.

Sky Media have been busy in recent history with the opting out Discovery Channel and E! Entertainment in Late 2009 and the move of Viacom into the Sky Media sales house in January 2010.

Comedy Central Extra will be the latest station to air Irish ads. From the 10th of November, the self professed ‘box set’ station will become Sky Media Ireland’s 13th station available to Irish advertisers.  From the 1st of January Sky Media will also be the sales house for Living TV which had previously been sold through TV3’s 3sales. This move follows the acquisition by Sky of the Virgin Media channels in the UK. Living TV is be rebranded to Sky Living and will receive an improved position on the Sky platforms EPG (Electronic Programming Guide). Finally, Sky’s acquisition of HBO’s programming has also led the network to create a new station set to air in February 2011. This new station ,Sky Atlantic, will carry such programmes as the latest season of Mad Men as well as the much anticipated Boardwalk Empire, Treme and Luck.

TV3 – Gaelic Games coverage

TV3 today announced an upgrade to its Gaelic Games coverage over the next three years.   From next year, All-Ireland series quarter-finals will form part of TV3’s annual GAA output as well as provincial finals, top level Qualifiers and the pick of the provincial fixtures.  Following a lengthy tender process, TV3 has been awarded “Pack 2”, the second of five Championship Packages. This represents a higher tier of fixtures for the Irish Commercial Broadcaster than three years ago when TV3 was awarded ”Pack 3″, the third of five packages.

TV3 Commercial Director, Pat Kiely said “This new package delivers better fixtures for TV3 viewers and a higher proportion of the Championship fixtures available for broadcast. We developed an excellent relationship with the GAA over the last three years and we are thrilled to renew for the next three years. TV3 has been making breakthroughs in all areas of our business recently including fantastic audience growth, increased local production and further development of our multi-platform offering. We are delighted to add to this with more impetus to our GAA Championship output”.

TG4/Post TV – Announcement !

“TG4/Post TV wishes to announce that Anna de Barra, having headed up the TG4 Airtime and Sponsorship Sales for the last 14 years, will be leaving to pursue new opportunities.  Claire Murphy, who has worked with Post TV for the past 7 years, will head up the team going forward.  Claire has gained considerable Industry experience on both sides of the business, having been a core member of the TG4 sales team for the last 7 years and having previously worked on the advertising agency side.  We would like to take this opportunity to thank Anna for her dedication and commitment to TG4 over the last 14 years and to wish her the very best of luck in the future. Christmas Fm – Coming Soon

On air 24 hours a day from late November to the end of December, Christmas FM is expanding again this year beyond Dublin and Cork for the first time into Galway, Limerick and the south-east. Walter Hegarty, technical director for Christmas FM, said the reaction to the station had been fantastic, and that last year more than a third of its target audience of 15 to 44year-olds tuned in. ‘‘The station has proven a very effective medium, not only for generating donations, but also for heightening awareness and the profile of our charity partner,” he said.  A festive-themed radio station, Christmas FM will once again feature a mix of classic Christmas music and chat. Current and former radio personalities will volunteer their time to fill the presenting roles.  A charity station, it is entirely run by volunteers, who are assigned roles according to their area of expertise.  More than 100 volunteers are expected to participate across the on-air production and promotion of the station this year, each devoting between 20 and 50 hours of their time.  Last year’s programme raised €70,000 for the Simon Community.  Research carried out independently found that recognition of the Christmas FM brand increased from 33 per cent to 47 per cent among 15 to 44-year-olds from the 2008 to the 2009 programme, while listenership increased from 25 per cent to 38 per cent.  The number of texts received by the station in 2009 was also up by 50 per cent on 2008.

Opel – Scrappage Options

Participating Opel Dealers will be heavily promoting their scrappage options for consumers by encouraging people to visit their local Opel garage on the 20th and 21st of November. The garages will have art competitions for children to keep them entertained while parents can browse the stunning collection of Opel vehicles. There will be national press activity to support this and encourage consumer engagement.

The Sunday Times – Partners Rugby!

The Sunday Times has signed a partnership deal to become the official print media partner for the Heineken Cup and the Amlin Challenge Cup rugby competitions in Ireland.   The partnership is with ERC, the organising body for the two competitions.  To mark the deal, The Sunday Times will be running numerous reader competitions for match tickets for both tournaments throughout the season. The newspaper also recently gave readers a free double-sided poster with both the Heineken Cup and Amlin Cup Challenge fixtures for the season.  “The Sunday Times is delighted to secure the partnership with ERC to become the official media partner of the Heineken Cup and the Amlin Challenge Cup in Ireland,” said Michelle McCarthy, brand manager of the newspaper. “The Sunday Times has excellent sports and rugby writing credentials with our team of hugely influential rugby writers and commentators including Stuart Barnes, Stephen Jones, Peter O’Reilly and Denis Walsh.”

Irish Times – win online awards!

Irishtimes.com has been named Ireland’s Best Website at the 2010 Realex Irish Web Awards.  The award was presented to online editor Hugh Linehan at a ceremony at the Mansion House in Dublin on Saturday night. It is the first time the website has won the overall prize, which was selected by a panel of 140 judges.

Irishtimes.com was also named Best Online Publication, beating some stiff competition.  This is the third year in a row that the site has won in this category.  Irish Web Awards organiser Damien Mulley congratulated irishtimes.com on its success.  “As well as being a consistent winner in the news category each year, The Irish Times website was chosen as Grand Prix winner for a well-designed, open website which provides valuable information to Ireland and beyond,” he said. “Importantly, the blogging and Twitter interactions by Irish Times staff means it is a strong member of the Irish web community.”

Bravo – CIE’s preferred supplier

Bravo Outdoor was nominated today by CIE as the preferred supplier to handle its Outdoor Advertising services in Ireland.

The contract is estimated to be worth €40 million over 3 years, covering sales of all CIE bus, rail and roadside advertising displays (excluding bus shelters).

“Bravo is delighted to be nominated as the preferred supplier after a highly competitive tender process and we look forward to concluding the outstanding formalities in the near future with CIE.
