Welcome to the first Vizeum Newsletter in its new format! We’re changing from our monthly newsletter to a blog, which will enable us to keep you updated more regularly on the latest media news and market developments.

It was a busy month in media with the latest JNLR Jan – Dec 2009 figures being released as well as the JNRS Jan – Dec 09 and ABC July – Dec 09 figures being released for press.
Other highlights in this month’s Newsletter include an Outdoor market review for 2009 along with the winner of the Independent Digital Grand Prix award being announced and the highest grossing Irish films for 2009 being confirmed.
No prizes for guessing which film was number 1.

Total radio listenership continues to grow nationally with the number of adults listening daily up 2 points YOY to 87%. The growth in listenership continues to be driven by Regional / Local / Multi City station, with these gaining 3 points to 58%. On the 19th of February IAPI held a meeting with the Media Agencies to discuss the future incorporation of Time Shifted Viewing into audience measurement reporting in Ireland from September 2010. Over 17% of TV homes now possess a Digital Television Recorder, mainly Sky+/UPC+ so it was an important process that AGB Nielsen have undertaken to deliver as part of their contract renewal agreement. Out of Home Overall Market Display Value ROI and NI 2009
As was the case across the media landscape, the out of home sector faced a major readjustment in 2009. Some significant changes occurred within the industry during the year but the fundamental strengths of the medium remain and so it continues to play an important role in the plans of advertisers going forward. The display value for the whole sector was more or less the same as 2009, bearing in mind an additional cycle 27 in 2009 increased the value of the market. Clear Channel Outdoor, 3D Exposure and Twentieth Century Fox have combined to launch what are believed to be the first digital transit shelters with 3D that can be seen without the need of glasses for the movie Percy Jackson & The Lightning Thief.

The cyber grapevine has gone crazy with speculation that micro – blogging platform Twitter is about to embark on an advertising strategy and is testing advertising platform.

After 10 years in the Digital Advertising Sales business, SalesOnline announced the sale of its Online & Mobile Advertising assets to Electric Media.
With the transfer of these assets, Electric Media now becomes the largest Irish Online & Mobile Advertising sales house.

JNRS full year report and ABC report for the second half of 2009 was released last month.
It seems that there is a mixed bag this year, as the trends in circulation aren’t mirrored in the readership figures.

The Irish Daily Star has recently launched new research findings on newspaper readership. Conducted by Millward Brown Lansdowne, the survey looked at readers’ media usage habits, and in particular, their engagement with, and attitudes towards, daily newspapers in Ireland.
A robust sample of 500 respondents was questioned on where and when they read their daily title, the length of time spent reading and the intensity of their reading experience.
