App of the month: JDIFF (Jameson Dublin International Film Festival)

As Ireland completes its transition from snow storage to official wind tunnel of Europe, we can be forgiven for wanting to spend our time indoors this February and unless you’ve been swept away into the overcast sky, you’ll have noticed the Jameson Dublin International Film Festival has launched around our fair city. Providing stunning visual and aural entertainment, JDIFF promises a global cultural cinema experience we can all appreciate from the comfort of indoors, not to mention cushioned seats with cupholders either side, something missing from my own stool in front of the TV. With over 100 movies playing in 8 different cinemas, some may think it daunting to decide how many they should go see!

Enter the JDIFF App. Available for both Android and iDevices, the JDIFF app is the quintessential guide to everything you need to know about the festival.  The app features:

  • Film listings by title, date and location.
  • A synopsis on each film showing at the festival.
  • Related film events happening around JDIFF.
  • A calendar for scheduling the films you do want to see.
  • And a background to the JDIFF festival.

So until the country has been roofed, you’ll know where to find me this February.

Sponsored stories on Facebook

Facebook is launching a new ad format called “Sponsored Stories,” which allows participating advertisers to promote your Facebook activity by turning it into homepage ads seen only by your friends. This activity can include liking a Facebook page, checking in via Facebook Places or sharing content to the News Feed from a Facebook application.

These shares, which would have appeared in your friends’ News Feeds anyway, are now given special promotion by way of a Facebook ad that appears on the right-hand side of the homepage. The ad will display your friend’s name, photo, a picture and link to the relevant Facebook Page or application, plus any likes and comments. We are delighted to announce that Vizeum and Jameson will be the first in Ireland to run with this new format.  It will run as part of the Jameson Dublin International Film Festival.

Importance on Web 2.0

The term Web 2.0 encompasses the applications on a site which allow users to interact and collaborate with each other in a social media dialogue, i.e. it allows and creates conversation between brand and audience. Examples of Web 2.0 include social networking sites, blogs, wikis and video sharing sites.

A recent survey conducted by Mckinsey research has highlighted that companies who use Web 2.0  intensively gain greater market share and higher margins. The Survey encompassed responses from 3,249 executives across a range of regions, industries, and functional areas.

Two-thirds of the respondents reported used Web 2.0 in their organizations. Respondents were asked about their patterns of Web 2.0 use, the measurable business benefits they derived from it, and the organizational impact of Web technologies. They also inquired about the market position of the respondents’ companies, whether their market share had changed, and how their operating margins compared with those of competitors in the same industries.

Not only did executives report on a broad set of benefits as a result of their web investments, but also a relationship between their market share gains, operating profits market leadership and their Web 2.0 investment. Mckinsley state that these benefits are achieved by forging closer marketing relationships with customers and by involving them in customer support and product- development efforts.

Online Update

Despite the doom and gloom that shrouds not only the advertising industry but Ireland as a whole, digital Ireland has remained a bastion of hope.  The internet market continues to grow.  Internet subscriptions are up 8.1% on Q2 2009 to 1.6 million.  Adults using the internet on a monthly basis rose 9% to 2.5 million versus October 2009.  Internet ad spend is up 12.1% for H1 2010 versus H1 2009.

2010 was also heralded as mobile internet’s coming of age.  While many shouted, “We’ve been here before!”, the shift has been greatly aided by iPhones being available on three networks as opposed to being an O2 exclusive handset.  A greater selection of handsets developed for internet usage on all networks as well as keener competition on data transfer prices from all networks.  TGI’s 2009 survey recorded 26% of adult access the internet via a mobile device compared to just 9% in 2008.  Anecdotal data suggests that this may now be as high as 35%.  While Nokia boasts the greatest number of smart phone handsets in the market, a quick look at any website’s analytics shows that in terms of mobile internet usage, iPhone’s are the clear drivers, followed by Android.  Online television catch-up services has also featured prominently this year.  Nielsen’s establishment survey shows that 15% of households are regularly watching TV content via an online player.  Figures from RTE and TV3 suggest that the player is being used at the same time as peak television viewing and interestingly extends evening viewing by an hour.

 Onwards and upwards for 2011

App Review – RTÉ News Now

Last week saw the Gibson Hotel in the Point Village host the very first mobile application awards ceremony in Ireland known as the Appys. The awards show was established to honour mobile application developers for their innovative, creative and useful applications.  With 170 entries for it’s first year, 60 of which made the shortlist, there was stiff competition for each entrant as apps were judged on seven attributes including design, relevance to the target market, utility and innovation.  The RTÉ News Now app took home the Grand Prix, the highest honour of the night. The app provides users with the latest national and international news including the latest headlines, business news, sports news and entertainment stories. Jameson – Easygoing!

Jameson Irish Whiskey launched Easygoing’, a new advertising campaign for the brand that shows Jameson drinkers to be the most easygoing folk in the world – even in the face of a national disaster.

The first spike of activity sees the launch of two ads Crocogaator and Meteor.

Crocogator depicts two men relaxing with a glass of Jameson after a day at work in New York, observing through the window a large animal – a human predator – emerges from a manhole. Rather than panic, one nonchalantly asks the other ‘Is that an Alligator or crocodile?’

In Meteor a group of friends relax on the balcony of their friend’s apartment, enjoying a Jameson as the sun sets.  As a fiery hot meteor bursts into the evening sky, instead of running for cover, our easygoing Jameson drinkers comment that the meteor will make quite a splash.

The media placement will be focused on premium lifestyle print and leading national broadsheets. Heavy weight outdoor and on line activity will be used to further enhance the campaign.  Also, look out for the Jameson competition on Facebook –  Are you the most Easygoing person?  You can win a trip for four to Barcelona on  www.facebook.com/jamesonireland
